Q: What is SDSU Mock Trial?

A: SDSU Mock Trial is a pre-law organization in which students work on a detailed case to simulate a real trial. SDSU Mock Trial teams showcase their public speaking, acting, and critical thinking skills by competing against other schools both regionally and nationwide.

Q: What are mock trial cases like?

A: Each year, the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) crafts and releases a brand new case issue. These cases annually shift between pertaining to a criminal or civil issue and contain detailed case law, affidavits, evidence, and more.

Q: What roles can students hold in mock trial?

A: There are two different roles which students fulfill on a mock trial team: attorneys and witnesses. Attorneys and witnesses can compete on one or both of two sides in each case: the prosecution/plaintiff or the defense.

Q: What do attorneys do?

A: Attorneys are expected to use their analytical skills to craft and execute unique arguments through opening statements, direct and cross examinations, and closing statements.

Q: What do witnesses do?

A: Witnesses are expected to create and portray memorable characters. They must know the witness they are playing like the back of their hand and be prepared to emote and improvise depending on the scenario they are in.

A: Joining SDSU Mock Trial is a great way to develop personal and interpersonal skills that can be beneficial in every field. Our organization offers an opportunity to meet other dedicated students, build relationships with attorneys, law students, and judges, and even travel to other states to compete.
